Kids Dental Anxiety, Behaviour & Comfort Management in Kelowna
What is Behaviour Guidance?
Pediatric dentists have extensive education and training in the psychology of child behaviour. Sensitive and affectionate management of a child’s fear, anxiety or pain is the foundation of our treatment approach. We use consistent yet adaptable methods of behaviour guidance that are scientifically proven. We provide desensitization visits for children with special needs. We are especially involved in helping children with autism become cooperative dental patients. We can help children with autism learn new routines and become accepting of dental office visits.
What is Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation?
Nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation (sometimes called "happy air" or "laughing gas") is a safe and gentle way to help children feel more relaxed during dental treatment. It is given through a small, comfortable nosepiece, allowing your child to stay awake, responsive, and in control at all times. This type of sedation can ease anxiety, reduce a strong gag reflex, and make dental visits more positive and manageable. Many children finish their appointment with a real sense of accomplishment, proud of what they have achieved in the dental chair.

What is General Anesthesia?
Some children may not accept treatment in the office. In these cases, we offer dental treatment under general anesthesia in the hospital in Kelowna and Summerland. In fact, Interior Health Authority has partnered exclusively with our office to establish the Interior Health Authority Pediatric Dental Program at Summerland Health Centre. This program operates 7 days each month, and we are able to provide comprehensive dental care to children under general anesthesia.
